Your Message, Your Words: How Christian Ghostwriting Services Work

What a Christian ghostwriter does, what ghostwriting costs in 2026, how to keep the book in your own voice, and the questions to ask before you hire anyone.

Christian ghostwriting services pair you with a professional writer who turns your message, sermons, stories and teaching into a finished book that sounds like you and is published under your name. A good Christian ghostwriter does more than write well. They interview you, capture your voice, keep your theology intact, check every Scripture reference, and shape years of ministry into a clear structure a reader can follow. Most charge a flat project fee; for nonfiction that usually runs in the tens of thousands of dollars. Others, like our Angel Writing service, work monthly: you meet your writer once a week, they write between sessions, and you pay only for the months you need. Either way, the words on the page should be yours, and you should approve every chapter before it goes to an editor.

Key takeaway: the best Christian ghostwriting service captures your voice and your convictions, shows you every chapter as it is written, and tells you the full cost before you begin.

What does a Christian ghostwriter do?

A Christian ghostwriter is a professional writer who writes a book on your behalf, from your ideas, experience and teaching, for publication under your name. The work usually begins with interviews: recorded conversations in which you tell your stories, explain what you believe and why, and describe the reader you want to reach. The writer then builds an outline, drafts chapters, and returns each one to you for changes. Along the way a good Christian ghostwriter does three things a general writer may not. They protect your theology, so the book says what you actually teach. They check Scripture references and quotations, so a reader can trust every verse. And they keep the tone pastoral rather than preachy, because the book is meant to serve the reader. Ghostwriters can also work from existing material: sermon series, podcast transcripts, a blog or a half-finished manuscript. The result should read as if you wrote it on your best day, with your stories, your phrases and your convictions intact. Readers are waiting for these books: Publishers Weekly reported that religion publishing revenue rose 7.8% in 2023, well ahead of other categories.

What ghostwriting costs in 2026

Ghostwriting is one of the larger costs in publishing, because it is the writing itself. Reedsy reports that a professional ghostwriter typically costs between $18,000 and $50,000 for a nonfiction book, with experienced writers charging upwards of $40,000 and per-word rates ranging from $0.10 to $3. Most quote a flat fee that covers research, interviews, drafting and revisions, and most are paid up front rather than from royalties. That model suits authors with a large budget and a firm deadline. It is a hard first step for a pastor, a ministry leader or a first-time author. That is why we built a monthly model. Our Angel Writing service costs $1,500 per month, includes 15 hours of writing and about 10,000 words each month, and the average book is finished in about three months. Whatever model you choose, ask for the total estimated cost to a finished manuscript, and what happens if the book takes longer than planned.

Keeping the book in your own words

The fear most Christian authors bring to ghostwriting is that the book will not sound like them, or worse, will say things they do not believe. Both are avoidable. Here is how a good process protects your voice.

1. Record every interview, so the writer works from your actual words, not their notes.

2. Agree on the reader, the big idea and the outline before any chapter is drafted.

3. Review each chapter as it is written, not the whole book at the end.

4. Keep a short list of your phrases, stories and convictions that must appear.

5. Mark anything theological you want checked, and check it again in the edit.

An author who reviews one chapter a week stays in control of the book. An author who sees the manuscript only at the end often has to rewrite it. In our experience the weekly rhythm also helps busy leaders actually finish, because the book moves forward even in weeks when they could not write a word themselves.

Questions to ask before you hire a writer

Ask every ghostwriter or ghostwriting service the same questions, and get the answers in writing. Who will actually write the book, and can I speak with them before I sign? Have you written Christian nonfiction before, and can I read a sample? How do you handle theology and Scripture? How often will I see chapters, and how many rounds of changes are included? What does the full project cost, how is it billed, and what happens if it runs long? Who owns the manuscript and the copyright? Will my name be the only one on the cover? A service that answers these plainly is one you can trust with your story. Be wary of any provider that will not let you meet the writer, that cannot show Christian work, or that claims the rights to your material. Once the manuscript is finished, the next step is publishing; our guide to choosing a Christian book publishing company explains what to ask a publisher.

How Angel Writing works

Angel Writing is Spirit Media's ghostwriting service for Christian authors, and it is built around one hour a week. You meet with your Angel Writer by Zoom or phone for an hour each week. Between sessions your writer spends three to four hours writing, in your own words, from what you shared. In the first month the book is outlined; in as little as 90 days the manuscript is written. The service costs $1,500 per month, and you pay only for the months you need, so a typical book costs a fraction of a flat-fee ghostwriter. When the manuscript is done it moves straight into editing and publishing with the same team, in paperback, hardback, eBook and audiobook, with a 50/50 royalty split. Many of our authors start with a short Express Book of about 12,000 to 15,000 words, which an Angel Writer can draft in as little as a month. Read our guide on how to publish a Christian book to see every step after the writing.

Is ghostwriting honest for a Christian author?

Some authors worry that using a ghostwriter is less than honest. It does not have to be. The ideas, stories, convictions and teaching in the book are yours; the writer supplies the craft that turns them into readable chapters, much as an editor, a speechwriter or a worship leader's arranger does. Many memoirs and leadership books are written with professional help. What keeps it honest is ownership: you approve every word, you can stand behind every claim, and the book says only what you actually believe and teach. If a ghostwriter adds a story you did not live or a view you do not hold, it no longer belongs in your book. Some authors also choose to thank their writer in the acknowledgments. Used that way, ghostwriting is simply stewardship: the message you have been carrying for years finally reaches readers who need it, instead of waiting for a free season that never comes.
